The water and nutrients needed for the growth and development of bromeliads are mainly stored in the grooves formed by the leaf base and absorbed by the absorption scales at the base of the leaves. Even if the root system is damaged or rootless, as long as there is a certain amount of water and nutrients in the groove, the plant can grow normally. But that doesn't mean the substrate doesn't need to supply water.
